May 17th in the ice caves

We woke to a cold and blusterous day here. We went out to see the parade and I could not believe how the marching band could play in that blizzard!

The whole populatin of Longyearbyen participated in the parade and there was virtually no one watching. We joined in as well and followed the parade into town.

After the parade we had to stop and buy ice cream, no matter the weather! That's what May 17th is for!

Then we stopped by Linda and Kjeti's barracks to pick up poles and started the hike up to the ice caves where Linda leads tour groups.

It took about 1 1/2 hours to get there and most of the walk was cold, windy and snowing. The ice caves are caves that run under a glacier and it was facinating.

The ice crystals were huge and you could see how the river cut away under the glacier in the warmer months.

We hiked/crawled/and crept through the icy wonderland for a few hours and finished off the tour with our lunch and a bottle of champagne.

When we came out the weather wasn't much better, but we were well dressed and had a nice hike home anyway.

Another amazing day in this great place!
