Hiking Røssdalen

Anybody remember Røssdalen? Cornell, Thomas and I hiked it 5 years ago, and ended up at Blåfjellenden after spending one night outside. This weekend we had an easier trip, hiking only parts of this beautiful valley.

We set off Sunday morning. Both Thomas and Linda brought a friend, Thomas brought Eivind, and Linda brought Marita. Needless to say, the Toyota was quite full, as we were going to spend the night in tents.

The weather was quite nice, partly cloudy and chilly. We parked at the entrance area at Øvre Espedal at noon, and hiked for an hour before we set up our tents. We had 3 tents; one for grown-ups, one for girls and one for boys. As soon as the camp was ready we hiked up through the rockslide (I think you remember that one Cornell). Luckily the trail through the boulder-maze was very well marked, so the hike wasn't too difficult. Carrying only one backpack in the group made it even easier, we left most of the equipment by the tents.

We hiked on up to Indravatnet, a secluded lake at the foot of the rockslide. By now the weather was really nice, so we hung out for a while, fishing and relaxing. Both Thomas, Eivind and I brought fishing rods, and the trout was actually quite willing to bite.

In the evening we hiked back to the campsite, and prepared lamb for dinner. Yes. We did bring fresh meat :-) Afterwards we fried the trout, and everybody had a taste, except Marita, who is not too keen on fish anyway. Eivind tried it though, and was on the verge of enjoying it.

After dinner we lit the camp fire, and sat around chatting until 11. Everybody except me was a little bit cold during the night, as the temperature dropped to about 4-5 degrees Centigrade.

We woke up to clear blue skies and sunshine, and made oatmeal, sausage and coffee for breakfast. Then we hiked up to Indravatnet again. Both Thomas and Marita and I cought fish, so we had another taste for lunch.

In the evening we hiked back, packed and drove home. Came home around 9:30, and cleaned up most of the gear before going to bed.

A great weekend, good company and great nature. Hope to go on more hikes in not too long. The only thing Linda missed about this trip was the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. We'll have to do something about that.

Sounds like a load of fun, wish we could have been there with you! Maybe someday we'll make it up for some summer hiking!

Hi Knut - I remember it well and it was certainly a strenuous hike for part of time. Hiking the rock slide in the rain was especially fun.....

How far up the valley did you go - did you get to the "cave" where we had dinner and I spent the night?

I would be happy to try again although hopefully the trail markings will have improved.

Hi Cornell, we didn't make it to the cave, we stopped at the lake to fish. It would have been fun to see it again though. The trail markings were very good to and through the rock slide, but after that it stopped. The trail along the lake was also quite faded, so I guess taking the whole trip up to Blåfjellenden would have been just as difficult now as when we did it.
