Yesterday we made it back to the Farm after five days in the BWCA, in what we belive to be our eighth canoe trip with Patti and Cornell. As always, the setup was perfect, three kevlar canoes, three tents, seats, pads, food and drinks in abundance for all of us.
We stopped at the Tower mines on our way up to Ely, and toured the bottom of the mine, half a mile under ground. Cool excursion which also gave us a good overview of the history of the Soudan Tower region.
Paddling into the BWCA the following day was a delight, temperatures in the 70s, and crisp, sunny conditions. We got to our site at Oyster around five in the afternoon, after six portages, several bever dams, Moose River, Nina Moose Lake and Oyster river with the rather obscure waterway. They said it couldn't be found, but we are the masters of Oyster river :)
For the first time, bugs was almost an issue, especially at night. Even Cornell had to dress up and admitted that the bugs were relatively thick. The heat and humidity made dressing up relatively uncomfortable, making us getting into the tents somewhat earlier than what we normally do.
The weather during the days was nice and sunny, so our day trips were lovely. We also had some excitement going into Hustler on the 310 rod portage. Midways we encountered a beaver dam that we had to paddle across before we could resume the portage.
Enjoy the pictures everybody! We certainly enjoyed the trip. Thank you so much for taking us Patti and Cornell :)
